Nine Missouri public universities participate in the Leadership Academy by selecting students to attend each year:
•University of Missouri – Columbia (MU)
•University of Missouri – Kansas City (UMKC)
•University of Missouri – St. Louis (UMSL)
•Missouri University of Science & Technology
•Truman State University
•Missouri State University
•Southeast Missouri State University
•University of Central Missouri
You must be a student at one of these Universities in order to apply.
While there is an emphasis on public policy and civic engagement at the Leadership Academy, students from all majors are encouraged to apply. Shear Fellows from all academic disciplines benefit and build leadership skills that are applicable to their chosen field. Program faculty come from a variety of backgrounds, including law, business, public service, engineering, education, the non-profit sector, healthcare, criminal justice, real estate and more.
MU, through the co-sponsored offerings of the MU Office of Service Learning and the Vice-Provost for Undergraduate Students, awards fellowships to four students each year to represent the campus at the week-long Leadership Academy. All academic majors at the graduate and undergraduate levels are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to students who will be returning to MU in Fall 2017. A faculty/staff selection committee will review all applications, interview top candidates in person, and select four applicants to attend the Leadership Academy.
All students selected to participate as Shear Fellows are expected to attend all 21st Century Leadership Academy sessions and live in the housing provided at UMSL during the entire program. Additionally, MU Shear Fellows are expected to assist with the planning and execution of a MU Sue Shear Fellows Women’s Leadership Roundtable event held the spring semester following your participation in the Leadership Academy.
