That’s all that it takes to provide 12.5 meals to those in need this holiday season.
With even a small donation, The Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri can help feed more than 114,000 hungry people every month in 32 Missouri counties.
“Any giving has a tremendous impact,” says Mike DeSantis, communications and marketing coordinator for The Food Bank. “Some people can donate money, others food, still others their time. Hungry people benefit from all we can give.”
Besides physical donations, The Food Bank is also looking for those willing to give another commodity – their time.
“We need volunteers all the time,” DeSantis says. “Our volunteer base is outstanding, and without them, we wouldn’t be able to function and do our job.”
From working to break down bulk shipments of food in the storeroom to manning tables at various drives throughout the year, volunteers have the power to make a difference in the community. In 2013, nearly 45,000 volunteers donated more than 105,000 hours of service, equal to the work of more than 50 full-time employees.
Partnership Against Hunger, The Food Bank’s Thanksgiving drive, is this Tuesday, Nov. 25, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Columbia, Jefferson City, Fulton and Moberly. Those who are able to help are encouraged to contact Volunteer and Clerical Supervisor Melanie Lake at 573-474-1020.
“We can’t have too many happy, smiling voices for location events,” DeSantis says. “It encourages people to get involved and see how important [our cause] is.”
Wal-Mart, Schnucks and Cumulus Radio are sponsoring this year’s Partnership Against Hunger.
Locations of the drive are:
Columbia – all three Wal-Mart locations, Schnucks
Jefferson City – Wal-Mart on Missouri Blvd., Schnucks, Chick-Fil-A
Fulton – Wal-Mart
Moberly – Wal-Mart
One 4 One, The Food Bank’s next holiday drive, is Wednesday, Dec. 17 at the northeast corner of Providence and Broadway. This is the drive’s ninth year, and last year alone the event garnered over 50,000 pounds of food.
Zimmer Radio, KMIZ, Inside Columbia, Columbia Professional Fire Fighters and Woodcrest are sponsors of this year’s One 4 One drive.
