For Hannah Peterson, service-learning student coordinator at the MU Sustainability Office, preserving the planet has been a priority since elementary school. In first grade, she went on a field trip to a local recycling center and learned about its benefits; namely, as she says, its power as the “gateway to sustainability.” The rest is history.
Literacy Action Corps, a non-profit and solely volunteer-based organization, started more than 50 years ago. Upon the organization’s opening, it worked to improve education by serving American citizens who were either illiterate or displeased with their meager reading and writing skills. Today, the organization offers language tutoring to all non-English speakers in the Columbia community.
