Put Theory into Practice...

The Capstone project for Interdisciplinary Studies students is designed to provide an opportunity for the students to integrate the course work taken in their program of studies. This takes one of several forms:

1. An independent research project under the supervision of a faculty member or:

2. A Service Learning Project in conjunction with a local non-for-profit agency in Columbia or:

3. An approved internship or:

4. An approved course that meets the particular student needs.

For the service-learning project, students work in conjunction with the staff of the Office of Service-Learning to select an appropriate non-for-profit agency that has a need that the Capstone student can help meet, and that is pertinent to their area of study (example projects include: website development, public relations campaign, program development).

A few things to note about this option are:

  • Students will schedule work time with the agency of approximately 4-5 hours per week. Some students may work more hours because of the nature of their project; while others may end up working more independently than others.
  • Each student will identify an appropriate project with the approval of a representative of the agency and the Office of Service-Learning. This project will culminate in a report to the agency as well as some tangible end product. These projects must also be approved by the Director of Special Degree Programs.
  • Each student will submit a 4-5 page mid-semester progress report to the Director of Special Degree Programs.
  • Each student will submit a final report to the agency, with a copy to the Director of Special Degree Programs.
